yppasswdd would be required if you want to change the NIS password
on the client host.

Is user dsilver also in the local passwd or only in the NIS map?

What does exactly not work?
Do you have a hosts map? Does it work?

Solaris has an /etc/nsswitch.conf. But I don't know which is the
FreeBSD equivalence.
