And you use a geometry of 255/63?  That's just plain wrong. 8-)  You 
should *always* use extended translation and a geometry of 255/63.
It must have been a fluke that your system booted on the 2940.  Without
extended translation enabled, the geometry should be 64/32.  Anything else
will cause the exact symptoms you are complaining about.
