What version of gmake do you have installed?
gmake 3.77 wouldn't handle a postgres build for me on OpenBSD/sparc
with similar effects.

Bad memory or cache, hot-rodded chipset settings, overheating CPU,
you name it.

Could be. If your hardware is flakey, the system isn't deterministic
anymore.
