Thanks.. Turns out, that the maker of the compact flash media I was using didn't
quite follow the specs, so occaisionally it did not write the data to the disk
completely - something you need when building a filesystems. BAH!  These compact
flash cards (Hitachi's) are going back, and I'll order 30 of something else.
