Definately not the cleanest/best.  What's wrong with -HUP.

-KILL [aka -9] give no chance for proper file closure and cleanup.

It should be the kill of last resort.  Someday you will have to
clean up a mess [usually the best way to be sure is a restart]
where the -KILL leave lock files, etc., strewn about.
