i'm not sure if i can help at all, but maybe something in the output of
these could shake lose something in our heads...

could you send us:

dmesg
fdisk /dev/da1
disklabel /dev/da1s1

# ./MAKEDEV da1s1e
# mount /dev/da1s1e /bak

# mount /dev/da1 /bak
# df

As you can see I still get the error.  At one point I also deleted the da1
entries and did a ./MAKEDEV all.
