No: this is the first Java compiler to be installed on this PC.

Neither of them is currently set, but I still see the same problem.

I wondered if classes.zip may have been corrupt, but I can view the
contents (using unzip -v) without any reports of errors.

I might try the previous 1.1.6 release and see if the problem still
exists. 

Any other suggestions?
