They might have been, but I don't usually re-boot unless I've done
an upgrade.  Maybe I just built twice while the source was at
BETA#0 stage?  In any case:

This has indeed caused the CD to be found again.  Not quite a
perfect test, because I did make the change to the config to
un-wire the controllers and disks.  Fortunately that doesn't seem
to have messed up the disk mounting or booting.
