I have transplanted the aforementioned firmware into my own drive, and
this fixes the problem altogether. There is no hardware problem, just the
firmware was broken.

Maybe someone with a drive that is still under warranty can push Toshiba a
bit? I'd settle for a firmware image being made available on their Website
or something like that.
