Consider this a very strong indication that your ports tree is not
up-to-date. The maintainer change was on February, 20 2002:
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/ports/net/gaim/Makefile.diff?r1=1.56&r2=1.57

I bet that your problems will disappear if you update your ports tree.
