     Well, it really wasn't much of a problem.  After upgrading to
3.1-RELEASE, I installed a bunch of packages, which included
windowmaker.  It didn't work due to a missing shared library, and so I
compiled it myself using the port.  It worked fine.

[ However, as I'm behind a firewall, I did manually ftp, to my system,
  the two (not one!) *.tar.gz files required by the windowmaker port. ]
