I dont have any 5.x production boxes, but on my RELENG_4 pop3 server

% cd /var/mail
% time ls -l > /dev/null
0.078u 0.078s 0:00.16 87.5%     420+4770k 0+0io 0pf+0w
% ls -l | wc
   11789  106166  955966
%=20

Thats with quite a few popper processes going as well.
