You can quite easily manage MPEG2 or AVI (with MPEG4) at 640x480
or (768x576 PAL) with a BT878 and ffmpeg (mencoder seems to be broken
ATM) provided you have at least an AMD XP2000 or thereabouts for processing.
You can get away with much less CPU (at the expense of disc space) using
Nuppelvideo.
