| business want is available. What's missing is vertical market
| software, and the ability to exchange files that use a some
| proprietary formats. If you're not dealing with one of those two
| cases, then FreeBSD works just fine for the desktop. If you have to
| deal with one of those two cases, then you need to select the
| application first, and buy a platform that can run it.

This is precisely correct.  I did not express it as well.

(And it should be noted that there is software to read most proprietary 
formats that works quite well, but my experience is that you can't write it 
back out as well.  Thus, .rtf, .ppt, .doc, and all those sorts of things can 
be imported into a FreeBSD system just great but you can't re-export them as 
readily.)
