The /dev/fd content looks strange:
[160]cicely9# ls -al /dev/fd/
total 33
dr-xr-xr-x 2 root wheel 512 Mar 6 16:59 .
dr-xr-xr-x 5 root wheel 512 Mar 6 17:00 ..
crw--w---- 1 ticso tty 5, 1 Mar 14 14:50 0

d-w------- 1 root wheel 512 Feb 28 15:20 3
d--------- 1 root wheel 512 Mar 6 16:59 4
[161]cicely9# uname -a
FreeBSD cicely9.cicely.de 5.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT #0: Thu Mar 6 10:27:16 CET 2003 ticso@cicely9.cicely.de:/var/d2/obj/var/d2/builder/FreeBSD-2003-03-05-cicely9/src/sys/CICELY9 alpha

The same on:
FreeBSD cicely5.cicely.de 5.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT #0: Mon Mar 10 01:26:47 CET 2003 ticso@cicely5.cicely.de:/var/d9/obj/var/d2/builder/FreeBSD-2003-03-09-cicely5/src/sys/CICELY5 i386

I even see the strange content on a -current from november last year.
