That's right; they live in /dev/net/ :

> ifconfig -l
rl0 plip0 lo0 tun0 ppp0
> ls -l /dev/net
total 0
crw-------  1 root  wheel  253,   3 Feb 12 07:23 lo0
crw-------  1 root  wheel  253,   2 Feb 12 07:23 plip0
crw-------  1 root  wheel  253,   5 Feb 12 07:23 ppp0
