I stand corrected -- you can use it on RELENG_6 as well:

$ egrep 'KERNCONF|CPUTYPE' /etc/make.conf
KERNCONF=PDSMI_PLUS_i386
CPUTYPE?=nocona

$ uname -a
FreeBSD anubis.sc1.parodius.com 6.3-PRERELEASE FreeBSD 6.3-PRERELEASE #0: Thu Jan 17 02:09:20 PST 2008 root@anubis.sc1.parodius.com:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/ANUBIS  i386
$ gcc -v
Using built-in specs.
Configured with: FreeBSD/i386 system compiler
Thread model: posix
gcc version 3.4.6 [FreeBSD] 20060305
