I'm not too sure how your kernel has been configured, but I've been able
to run this cpu ONLY after building a kernel with

cpu  "I586_CPU"

in the kernel.  I had the same thing happen when trying to run with a 
'486' kernel.  I'd think it would run with GENERIC, however.
