Hm. It's possible the CD-R isn't responding favorably to FreeBSD's probes. FreeBSD's CD-R support is limited, but I'd think that it'd interpret any unsupported CD-Rs into plain CDs. Can you force the CD-R to act like a CD-ROM temporarily?
