I can do this with no problems with -current on version 1.71
of st.c.  As with the rest of my system, vi was compiled with

CFLAGS= -O2 -m486 -pipe -fno-strength-reduce

Does adding the -fno-strength-reduce option help?  If not, the only
thing you can do, as others have suggested, is to compile a debug
version, fire up gdb and start digging.
