Probably, yes. If you know some details of the laptop, you can check
them against the Supported Hardware list at
http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/install-hw.html .

Yes. You will have to install pico, ofcourse. The editor pico is part of
the "pine4" port, which you can install with the sysinstall program or
if you have the ports collection, you can build the port like this:
cd /usr/ports/mail/pine4; make install
