Any 4.x system, say, for the sake of argument, 4.10-BETA, and access to
a 5.x system.

With this, I now see:

[root@4x:ports/converters/p5-MIME-Base64] 30# make -V RUN_DEPENDS
/usr/local/bin/perl5.8.2:/usr/ports/lang/perl5.8

which is expected behavior.  -current is not affected by this.
