This is actually perfectly normal nowadays. For reasons impenetrable
to us poor mortals, the developers of Xorg have decreed that the
default shall be that when testing X displays a blank, black screen
impossible to distinguish from certain classes of things /going
horribly wrong/(tm).

If you want the old grey patterned screen, try:

     # X -config /root/xorg.conf -retro

It's all documented in the handbook:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x-config.html

	Cheers,

	Matthew
