Is the vmmon_*.ko module loaded? I've got the following for using vmware
2:

	linprocfs.ko
	linux.ko
	rtc.ko
	vmmon_up.ko
	if_tap.ko

A recent kernel change meant that the vmmon kernel module needed
recompiling; ensure that all your sources are up-to-date.
