On a hunch I removed the forward clause from named.conf > (BIND8), restarted named and did sendmail -q, but still the same problem. Following up on this, although sendmail -q didn't work, the 30 minute retry (from the ORIGINAL delivery attempt time) did. Very strange. I waited for syslog to show that named was "ready to answer queries" before I did sendmail -q ... perhaps it was still too soon?
