I get that also on 2.2-STABLE.  Doesn't seem to matter if I have xdm
running or not for me.  One of my FreeBSD boxes is headless, and I have
the display on my sun,  I still get exactly the same problem.  

I though for a while it was because I was only running 32MB, but it
still happens now that I have 64MB.
