Dam, you are right! I tested it now successfully with an
OPENSSL_OVERWRITE_BASE system too.

Base  OpenSSL 0.9.6i, 500043 - works
Base  OpenSSL 0.9.7a, 470103 - works
Ports OpenSSL 0.9.7a, 470103 - works


Whats about CURRENT? does it work too? If so, i'm going to submit a PR
with
the ports Makefile patch only.
