Using Unix for more than 15 years, IMHO its a mistake to run
any make job as root (or anything you don't have to, for that matter)

When I make kernels, I chown -R leisner /usr/src/sys
(or something like that) so I didn't need to be  root.

IMHO, its a better idea to have special "install programs" running setuid,
with permissions:
	rwsr-x---
and put yourself into a special group to access them.

But, as a rule of thumb, the fewer things you have to do as "root", 
the fewer fatal mistakes you can make.
