My troubles seem to be more basic and probably unrelated to vinum.

A simple 'disklabel -e da1' brings up the editor screen with
a very reasonable set of numbers.  Exiting the editor results in an:

label: Operation not supported by device

and a pair of messages in /var/log/messages:

Oct 19 03:26:40 bls2 /kernel: da1: cannot find label (no disk label)
Oct 19 03:26:40 bls2 /kernel: da1s1: cannot find label (no disk label)

I resupped and issued a make world just in case there is some 
out-of-syncness someplace.

I may have forgotten the mention the system is SMP.
