It's possibly a bug for people to gratuitously break other architectures
so they don't build and therefore don't run, no matter how pure the
motivation. That trumps the purity argument, IMHO.

I spent about 10 minutes trying to fix it a better way but couldn't.
I'll spend some more time to try and clean up what is clearly some
incompletely thought out code- but if I don't make it tonite prior
to going off for a couple days with the family- feel free to break
the alpha builds again.
