Ok - I'll take your word that "./MAKEDEV snd0" works.

As far as "giving more details of the error" goes, that would be a lot
less hassle for me if I had internet access from home, and didn't have to
use web-cafes (where time costs money).

Yeh ... well I tend to write shell-scripts that give meaningful
error diagnostics when they can't handle a command-line argument.

Perhaps thats not FreeBSD policy :)
