 Hmm.. I could be way, way, off track but could you use DOS to format
 a 640MO disk, then read the disklabel with FreeBSD to check you 
 have the right disklabel?

 I've got one of the 230M Fujitsu drives, and it was interesting until
 I had the disks labeled & newfs'd just right.
