Do you or anybody else have other ideas? I am not sure if this helps but here is my case: I had the same problem with FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE+ and FreeBSD 8-RELEASE = running under vmware server 2.0 with Virtual Hardware Version 7. I was seeing 15min waiting period on boot.=20 I added a serial port in vmware and then disabled it in FreeBSD.
