If Patrick drops the GNU license in favour of a BSD license it should
be O.K.

Are the LPRng printcap and the LPD printcap exactly the same? An
application to convert printcap files will need to be built and
supported -- I suspect they're not exactly the same.

Replacing lpr/lpd with an application similar to FreeBSD's sendmail,
which calls the real MTA, would be nice. This way one can plug any
print spooler into FreeBSD and it should work.

Of course this raises the whole issue of packages. If the various
components of the O/S were packages, we wouldn't need this discussion.
In my former life as an MVS Systems Programmer, sites I had worked for
had a choice of spoolers: JES2 or JES3; a choice of security packages:
RACF, ACF/2, or Top Secret; a choice of serialisation software: GRS or
MIM; and the list goes on. If FreeBSD used packages to install
applications like RedHat, Solaris, and IBM's MVS for example, the
choice would be the sysadmin's.
