Well, I don't use the rc.conf entry at all because my webcam is usually not plugged in during boot. I have to use an entry in devd.conf instead so webcamd starts when I plug the webcam in. This is why I need the aforementioned wrapper script; it simply does not work otherwise. I don't remember exactly what was wrong, it's a few months ago. But I can tell you for sure that it did *not* work out of the box according to the documentation, so I had to write that script. At that time I assumed that it was some 8-stable vs. 9-current thing ... As I wrote previously, I didn't care too much since I got it working with that trivial wrapper script.
