Hey folks... Curious. Began reutilizing my 'new' laptop at work (ie: >I< got the old outdated thing because 'bsd requires less resources, right?' sigh. k2300 instead of a p3 700 (i think..oh well.) Anyway. Looking at the Errata for 4.1-R, i see that there seems to be a fairly major issue with boot...to the point that it would solidly deter me from using -R at /all/...i'd much rather /not/ have to go through the hassle of fixing a problem, since i am sure it is fixed in stable. (its just as easy to install stable as it is -R...) So, Which stable is the the most stable? I realyl dont wish to /remain/ stable (except for ports, perhaps..) as I dont have the time or drivespace to deal with remaking worlds. So which day's release has the least bugs?:) And, fyi, I'm still running FreeBSD 4.0-20000706-STABLE on 2 dns servers without a hitch (dual p3 700s with 1024 megs of ram, 2940 ultra2 scsi..). which leads me to my next question. My workstation is still 4.0-R, as outmoded as it is. (My home workstation and the server i run that sees the most production are both 3.3-R...the server was 3.0-R until only a few months ago....) The release is fine, BUT i hate the fact that th eports are outdated so quickly. (to the point that one often cannot even /install/ the port!!!) What would be the correct proceedure to remain uptodate (or just to manually update them occasionally) with the entire ports collection? (or perhaps even just a select group of them...no point for me to get the korean, japanese, etc stuff...) I think a 'sysinstall' type of program to select what you want to upgrade, and then ahndle it for you, would b great...or even a port of the ports. (ie: cd /usr/ports/ports; make install clean) or something. I dunno.
