Yes, it should work. I have HP Deskjet K209a and it works without problems.

Make sure that you enabled SCAN option in hplip port (it is disabled by default).

# scanimage -L
device `hpaio:/usb/Deskjet_Ink_Advant_K209a-z?serial=CN97UBQ0NQ05DC' is a Hewlett-Packard Deskjet_Ink_Advant_K209a-z all-in-one

# pkg_info -qW /usr/local/lib/sane/libsane-hpaio.so
hplip-3.11.3

# grep hpaio /usr/local/etc/sane.d/dll.conf
hpaio
