Am I skipping a step? I'm trying to install and run mysql

#cd /usr/ports/databases/mysql322-server
#make install

#mysql_install_db
#safe_mysqld &

#mysqladmin status
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/tmp/mysql.sock'
exists!

#ls -la /var |grep -in sock
{nothing}

#ps ax |grep -in mysql
