You can test the threadedness of perl and set a variable within your
Makefile by eg:

PERL_USETHREADS !=3D perl -MConfig -le 'print "YES" if $$Config{"usethr=
eads"};'

Also look at eg. the mail/imp3 port for the way it uses ldd to test
what capabilities are available in the mod_php shlib.
