Figured you all might be interested... (ignore the poor spelling, this
recruiter didn't graduate the 3rd grade, I think).

JOB DESCRIPTION
---------------------------------------------------
Position: Security Engineer
Location: SAN JSOE, California, United States
Type: Permanent F/T

Closing Date: 2005-08-06

Company:

Company was started by 3 engineers in July 2003. One of them is the founder/CTO of the company. They are funded by US Venture partners and Alloy Venture partners in Mid 2004 ($6 Mil, still have part of that in the bank, good through Dec 2006). They have shipped the first generation of the product to 2 customers. They are going to sell it to ecommerce companies, hosting providers and will be going after enterprise with enhancements to the current product or by developing the new product. They were fast in developing the Alpha of the product as that was done in 2003 itself.

Product:

The product is ready and has revenues. The Product is going to be an appliance which will sit in the network or outside and kind of eve drop on the network traffic and there punch line is “detect track mitigate quarantine within seconds”. The product is 95% software and the HW is off the shelf high end hardware. The secret of the software is the algorithms which run in it and the way they look at the different packets and try to relate the dissimilar packets and find out if there are worms or denial of service attack propagating, they prevent Network Availability Attack, address DDOS, Zero day worm, worm containment. They look at the unusual patterns and do a fine grained security. The dedicated appliance will protect a particular domain and number of appliances being used is depending on customers needs. Product can prevent inside out attacks as well as outside to inside attacks. Product can figure out where the traffic is coming from and block that port.

Team:

They have 15 people in the company 9 in the engineering. Most of the engineers are senior people, have done different things in the past, diverse but have the domain knowledge revolving around networking, IP layer 2/3/4 strong TCP/IP. Everyone reports to CTO. In future he wants these people become team leads/ managers …as of now they have a pretty flat organization, everyone is seasoned and motivated. More than half of engineering is focusing on systems, networking, performance and making the product and algorithms better and faster.. and others are focusing on database, management software and GUI which is Java based, capable of managing multiple device. They want to add another 15 people in next 12 months.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
---------------------------------------------------
Background:

This person will be a system level person, someone who will work on the networking stack of a operating system and has overall knowledge of a kernel . This person would have knowledge on what OS works best with what kind of hardware and knows the trade off in terms of better performance. You should have excellent knowledge on TCP/IP layer 2/3 and 4 and understand how sniffer kind of software’s work and should be able to define next generation sniffing stack.

You should be able to contribute to the architecture of next appliance and keep track of what is happening in the systems and moving kernel to new platform, understand and can give suggestions based on his/her experience what hardware would work best with what systems e.g Zeon or Opteron or Intel…Some one who even had written device drivers in the past more revolving around the networking and lower level of kernel , demonstrate the capability to solve sizable problems, should know how to sniff lots of traffic, what OS issues can be, what to expect from main processor or NIC when having high end load. Someone who has build appliance /firewall, storage system or in line email client. Someone who understands difference between VXworks or Linux and has worked on the networking stack or worked on server architecture, multiple processes, understands difference between SMP kernel and regular kernel, familiar with PCI or PCIx device drivers and kernel part of the appliance and
  hardware architecture…

Senior Appliance Engineer

Client is a Palo Alto-based startup that is focused on developing products and services that can help defend against next-generation cyber attacks. If you are highly motivated and productive, comfortable with working at a fast-paced, demanding startup that is introducing a new state-of-the-art security product to the market, this could be an excellent opportunity for you.

Notes based on conversation with hiring manager:

The candidate will have diverse background, someone who is more of a generalist with strong background in networking, systems, OS Kernel and solid TCP/IP knowledge. This person will work on the current product but more on the next generation of the product which will be an appliance doing collaborative security. Candidate should have experience in performance issues, should have understanding of what hardware works better with what systems, not necessarily doing any hardware development, e.g if the Intel motherboard is better or Opteron and understand the tradeoffs, can come up with ideas like if they need a TOE card or we need to offload TCP. Someone who demonstrates the ability to solve sizable problems in the area. They have hacked the Linux kernel and made changes as per their requirement. The person who comes on board will contribute in next generation appliance design and what hardware to use. The technology is revolving around Unix, Linux, FreeBSD, C, on the manageme
nt or GUI , it’s Java and Perl, TOMCAT, Apache, Java Web start, protocols HTTP,TCP/IP layer ¾. Someone who knows how to sniff lots of traffic, OS issues dealing with traffic load. The appliance has a off the shelf high end hardware. The job description below is very generic and it is not necessary to have each and everything in your profile..
