Thanks to Ulf and everyone who suggested solutions.   The system has 
apparently stabilized after a slue of disk failures and rebuilds.  I
am standing by with replacement backplane & controller waiting to see if
failures recur.  I suspect this incident was related to a power failure/surge
and reboot that occured immediatly prior.
