What I'm looking for here is more of a discussion about this issue (that is why I didn't put it to -questions). I apologize if this would be the wrong forum for this. Background: I'm running a few boxes which would seem to have a simple (common?) setup. Mostly they are remote 'web' boxes with the standard internet services (named,apache,sendmail,proftp,with ipfw). No users have shell access. I have used login.conf to limit the resources that 'nobody' has. What I would like input/discussion on is the following. I created a cron job that basically rsync'ed a backup to other locations. Unfortunately, it was a poorly designed program (since fixed) that ate up all of the resources (memory) and proceeded to create a sendmail queue of roughly 1/2 gig (which really helped out with my memory situation when sendmail choked on that). While this is somewhat amusing (if it doesn't happen to you), it gave the machines in question server loads greater than 15-25. Screeching halt. Fortunately, it was quickly resolved. So anyway ... What are people's experiences/opinions about setting resource limits on root processes (pros/cons)? While I expect I'll not do that again, it's always nice to have a safety net. Certainly, I would love to hear suggestions (other than "don't do that" or "write better code" - I freely admit that I am a dumbass so please lets move beyond that :). mike -have the lists in general been flame happy lately or what?
