I can reproduce this on any h/w with vchans turned on and playing mono mp3's 
at 44.1kHz.  Some quick fixes (none ideal):

o You've already guessed it - turn vchans off for the the time being.
o Resample the 44.1kHz stereo with lame (or your encoder of choice).

In theory, you could resample to any other mono rate, but the rate conversion 
code upto 4.7 introduces audible artifacts with non-integer conversions 
(though 48kHz to 44.1kHz may be alreight).
