You might want to run lpc from the command line, it will show you if the
queue and printing are enabled and ready. Here's what it looks like on
my machine:

bash-2.05a$ lpc status all
lp:
        queuing is enabled
        printing is enabled
        no entries in spool area
        printer idle
bash-2.05a$
