You'll need a .muttrc.  I've just checked: without it you'll get B&W.
There's a sample one in the distribution.

In addition, colour didn't work properly with older versions of
XFree86.  It does with the latest version, but I can't tell when the
change occured.  If it still doesn't work after installing a .muttrc,
you might like to install the latest version.
