So when I see the same after "Microsoft" and ".NET", and that
is true of "Microsoft", then...

You're wrong.  It's a circled "R" symbol.

P.S.: Passport is a common law trademark of their single sign-on
system, and I would be very surprised if it were not granted on
that basis, should they requuest it.

Note also that part of the license agreement for the Passport
SDL is that you not attempt to register it as a trademark in
other countries.
