So yes, that port requires newer GCC than is in base (die GPLv3, die)

I am not sure why the conditional was not causing the dependency on
ports gcc to fire correctly, or why that makefile was explicitly setting
cc=clang

As long as your issue is solved, best of luck, but really, embrace the
clang, the clang is your friend. Long live clang.
