I'm not familiar with FreeBSD 7.x, but should this not be an
option in /etc/make.conf?

According to the manpage of make.conf(5) on my FreeBSD/amd64
6.2-RELEASE it could probably be this:

   NO_LIBPTHREAD
(bool) Set to not build the libpthread (M:N threading)
            library.

bye
Fabian
