I just got done updating ports on my 4.8 (4.8-RELEASE-p7) laptop,
using the current ports tree (as of a couple of days ago).
I run my X sessions using 'startx' at a shell prompt, which calls my
.xinitrc. My .xinitrc is a copy of /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc,
except that it runs and ssh-agent then calls gnome-session, instead of
starting the old twm-era apps. In case it's relevant, I use sawfish
instead of metacity and have the gtk-bluecurve-theme-0.73 loaded.
It's been working this way forever.
The problem is: my custom background colors have disappeared.
I'm old fashioned, and use color xterms, which I configure by having
the following lines in my .Xresources file, which is "xrdb -merge'ed
by my .xinitrc
xterm*ScrollBar: on
xterm*SaveLines: 10000
Xterm*VT100*geometry: 80x35
Xterm*background: lightyellow2
My xemacs windows have also reverted to a dull battleship gray. I
have them configured via the pointy-clicky-menus, which ends up
dropping this fragment:

An 'xrdb -query' shows a lot of background's set to precisely the
color that I'm seeing (verified in gimp), #dcdad5.
I think what's killing me is this resource:
*background: #dcdad5
which seems (empirically and a priori) like it's splatting my
background settings.
This seems a bit autocratic/dictatorial, but maybe I'm somehow
swimming upstream?
I can't figure out where it's getting set. Is is part of one of the
myriad themes that the various gnome things use?
Pointers/suggestions would be appreciated.
