Yes, but I guess you could consider it as an "alpha", or maybe even
"beta".  It's was in its early stages in on the 3.1 Release.  I cannot
give you first hand experience b/c I didn't try to implement it, but
the code is at the bottom of the GENERIC kernel.

Buy an AGP Card by all means.

I (use to) have a Matrox Millenium G200 card that would run
beautifully @1024x768...32-bit mode.  That card, according
to XFree86 themselves, is one of the fastest X-Servers.
